This ice bucket was made in the 1920s and has been in service in various restaurants and bars until we managed to buy it.
The last 100 years have left their mark.
How do we know that this ice cedar is 100 years old?
Because Champagne Montebello ceased to exist as an independent brand in 1929, during the Great Depression, and apparently stopped making barware.
Montebello is a champagne house that was once a respected name in Mareuil-sur-Aรฟ.
The houseโs history dates back to the time when the Montebello brothers (Napolรฉon-Auguste, Alfred and Gustave) bought the Chรขteau de Mareuil-sur-Aรฟ (built in 1765) and its extensive vineyards in 1830.
The company was founded in 1834 under the name Alfred de Montebello.
Their business ceased in 1929, during a period of economic difficulties.
Construction of the castle was completed in 1765 under the direction of the French architects Chevotet and Chaussard.
In 1788, a family dispute led to the castle being put up for sale. The next owner was the Duke of Orlรฉans, known as Philippe Egalitรฉ, who was sent to the guillotine in 1793.
The ownership of the chรขteau, which included some 100 hectares of vineyards in Champagne, was successively acquired until 1830 by the sons of Jean Lannes, the first Duke of Montebello, a French general and marshal of the First Empire.
The chรขteau of Mareuil-sur-Aรฟ was then taken over by the Marshalโs eldest son, Napolรฉon-Auguste Lannes, 2nd Duke of Montebello, who was associated with his two brothers, Gustave, who was a general under Bonaparte, and Alfred 1st Count of Montebello.
Four years later, in 1834, the Alfred de Montebello Champagne House was founded and, despite repeated financial crises and wars, the vineyard was successful.
